I found out I was going to be a mom at 17. I spent many long nights staring up at the ceiling trying to imagine how my life was about to change. I had no idea how I was going to be a parent or how to give my child the things they would need. As scared as I was, I decided that raising my child was a commitment I wanted to make. With the support of my mom, I connected to Terra, and that’s when everything changed for me.

I knew that it was important for me to finish school, so I started attending Braemar, Terra’s partner school for pregnant and parenting moms. It was there that I felt a real sense of belonging. When I walked through the halls, I knew that there were other girls who felt how I felt. The teachers were understanding, and I learned that I could count on Terra to help me work towards my goals as a parent and for a brighter future.

When I was feeling overwhelmed or anxious, I was able to access Terra’s mental health program right at the school. And when my son, Caleb, was born, I felt safe knowing he was getting amazing care just down the hall from my classes at Terra’s Child & Family Support Centre. Everything was within my reach and with support from Terra, I began to feel like I could be a good parent. I could give Caleb what he needed and help him become the person he was meant to be.

When I graduated high school, I decided that Caleb and I needed a place of our own. Terra helped me secure a safe and affordable home through their Successful Families program in partnership with Brentwood Community Development Group. I had regular home visits with one of Terra’s Family Engagement Workers, who taught me about managing money and how to be a good tenant. While living at Brentwood I attended NAIT to help build my career as a Medical Lab Technician and as soon as I graduated, I got a great position in my field.

“My Terra staff member visited me at home and brought me diapers and other essentials. She helped me feel more confident as a mom. I felt safe to make mistakes, knowing that she was never too far away to help me. I credit Terra for helping me become an independent adult and a more confident mom.”

Caleb is almost 11 now and he is an amazing kid! He is bright and funny and full of energy. He loves hockey, playing video games, skateboarding and other adventurous activities. I remember when I first came home with my little bundle of love and how nervous I was. I am so glad there was a place like Terra for me when I needed them. I know that because of those first years with Terra by my side, I have the confidence to take on any of life’s challenges and I have the skills to build up my son and make sure his life is full of success.

I’m grateful for everything I’ve been able to do with Terra’s help, thanks to all the donors and supporters who’ve given over the years. Thank you for your support of Terra.

Terra’s community of support has made such a difference in my and my son’s life. Will you consider making a gift to Terra to ensure that tomorrow’s teen parents have access to the same life-changing supports that I had?
