Job Overview: 

The Family Engagement Worker: Young Dad’s Services assists young Fathers in their development of positive parenting skills to foster healthy parent-child relationships. Through home visits, community outreach and group programming participants are supported to make healthy choices and to develop their capacity to effectively meet the needs of their children. 

Job Conditions: 

This is a full time (35 hours/week) with flexible hours Monday through Friday, 1-2 evenings/week, and the occasional weekend based on the needs of families and staff and to support day/evening programming. The position will be working out of the Terra Centre located at 10320-146 Street and Braemar School located at 9359 67A Street. 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Be a leader and ambassador of Terra Centre for Teen Parents by practicing in a manner that is consistent with Terra’s mission, vision, values, policies, strategic goals and practice model 
  • Participate in the annual review process 
  • Provide ongoing support to children and families through home visits, phone calls, text messaging and emails 
  • Participate and engage in relationship building with the agency, partners, and community resources 
  • Coordinate referrals and assessments to other community resources for families and support them in building a strong connection with their community 
  • Plan, organize and facilitate family meetings to reflect the needs and interests of families and support strategies to identify goals 
  • Advocate for families in crisis, assisting with problem solving, communication skills, decision-making skills and goal planning to increase their confidence in meeting the needs of their children and family 
  • Identify community resources and contacts to continually enhance programming to meet both the needs of the families and the outcomes of the program 
  • Provide guidance and support as required to help participants build skills and confidence in problem solving 
  • Complete documentation including the progress on client goals. 
  • Complete monthly statistical information and collect outcomes measures data and evaluation 
  • Adhere to Terra’s policies and procedures and to the professional code of ethics of applicable professional associations 
  • Work to build an integrated service team and consult with the team to ensure participant needs are addressed 
  • Engagement in conversations during Community of Practice and Team Unit Meetings, Internal and External committees and resource fairs to increase staff awareness and capacity 
  • Plan and facilitate day and evening group programming across all Terra sites and in the community to support partnerships and collaborations programming 
  • Accountability in completing work efficiently and effectively 
  • Expand personal sensitivity and knowledge regarding different cultures 

Qualifications/Requirements: 

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Human Services, Social Work, or Child and Youth Care/Worker 
  • Experience providing outreach support services through home visitation 
  • Experience providing life skills coaching and training 
  • Experience working with low income and marginalized participants, including people facing multiple barriers 

Knowledge and Abilities: 

  • Effectively and respectfully works with others who have diverse traditions, beliefs, interpersonal styles, attitudes and behaviours 
  • Ability to work flexible hours, if required 
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written 
  • Ability to work with families from diverse cultural backgrounds and develop positive, effective, professional rapport and relationships with youth 
  • Knowledge of issues associated with people impacted by mental illness and substance abuse 
  • Knowledge of referral services and supports within the Edmonton community and/or the ability to research and connect with community resources 
  • Knowledge of child/youth development and child-parent attachment 
  • Understanding and knowledge of the issues pregnant and parenting young people face Police Information Check (including vulnerable Sector Check) and Child and Youth Intervention Check, completed within the last 90 days prior to start date. Processing times may take several weeks to complete these checks. Results will be reviewed on a case by case basis. 
  • Manual dexterity required to operate various appliances and equipment. Ability to lift between 25- 50 lbs. 
  • Current Standard First Aid with Level C CPR, renewed every 3 years 
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), renewed every 3 years 
  • Valid Driver’s License, clear (or Director approved) Driver’s Abstract, current vehicle registration 
  • Reliable vehicle, with 2 million dollars vehicle liability insurance, available for regular use, as outlined in Terra Policy

Compensation: The starting salary for the position is $45,000 – $47,857. 

Upon completion of a probationary period, we offer a comprehensive, competitive, extended health benefits package including RRSP contribution. Staff have three weeks of vacation, and, in addition, the agency is closed between Christmas and New Years. 

Terra Centre also offers free onsite or street parking depending on office location. We are also a casual business attire organization.
