Drumming is symbolic of one’s heartbeat; it represents life. Drumming is seen at powwows, sweat lodges, public ceremonies, in institutions, Indigenous-based agencies, homes, etc. Drums can be seen anywhere that healing, songs and dance takes place. Different drums and teachings are gifted to different cultures.
Participants will be a part of something unique. Bonding and being fully aware of a connection with each other will occur in the group. The drum teaches interconnectedness, balance, traditions, calmness and discipline.
Participants will gain self-worth and identity from this group. It will allow them to get to know themselves in a cultural and spiritual sense. It involves many teachings, languages and prayer. The songs are passed down from generation-to-generation, Elder to Elder, and are in the languages of the Indigenous people. Each song is valuable and are teachings and storytelling in themselves.
Participants will acquire or enhance skills that are beneficial for parenting. Examples include patience, respect, kindness, gentleness, truth, pride and to pass on the teachings to our younger generations.
Participants will gain singing and drumming skills to participate in opportunities such as singing at events. This will increase participants’ confidence and connection to culture.
