Each year, Terra, along with community organizations across Canada celebrate National Philanthropy Day.

As a community serving organization, we know that we can’t fully deliver our mission without our donors and volunteers. It’s thanks to generous community members that we are able to have the resources to serve our families and achieve our vision of teen parent families thriving and enriching our community.

We are so grateful to our supporters and are proud of what we can accomplish because of them.  We are excited to share more about our three nominees with you. We hope you are inspired by their amazing philanthropic contributions.

Sylvia Nasseri

“I support Terra because I believe in the value of education and support. With the support that Terra provides, young parents can untap their potential and raise their children in a secure, healthy and happy environment. I am proud to support Terra and see the difference my support makes in the lives of the families Terra works with.”

Sylvia Nasseri has been an incredible supporter of Terra for more than 20 years. Beginning as an in-kind supporter in 1997, Sylvia’s support has significantly evolved over the years as she has given her time, talents and treasures to support the work of Terra.

Sylvia has made transformational gifts to the agency, including significant contribution to Terra’s building project as well as establishing a fund at the Edmonton Community Foundation to support young parents in achieving their post-secondary education. Sylvia has been a community ambassador for Terra, introducing many new supporters to the agency and actively championing the work Terra does.

In addition to being an incredible donor, Sylvia served on Terra’s Board of Directors for 7 years, from 2004 to 2011, including being Board Chair for 3 years. As a leadership volunteer, Sylvia helped Terra develop a key fundraising initiative to ensure the agency had the financial capacity to be able meet the needs of the families we serve. Sylvia’s philanthropic leadership continues to benefit the agency more than a decade later.

Sylvia’s contributions have supported several young parents in their post-secondary journeys and have enabled Terra to be responsive to the complex and ever-changing needs of teen parent families in our community.

Imperial Oil Strathcona Refinery

“Imperial Strathcona Refinery is proud to support the Terra Centre and the important role it plays in our community setting teen parents up for success. For us, it’s more than just providing funding, it’s about working alongside organizations we support to truly make a difference in the community. This extends beyond a corporate philosophy as our employees are just as passionate about community involvement as the company.”  Keri Scobie, Public and Government Affairs Manager, Imperial Oil Strathcona Refinery

Imperial Oil Strathcona Refinery first connected with Terra Centre for Teen Parents through the United Way Day of Caring program. Since then, they have generously given their time, talent and treasure to help empower teen parents in our community to succeed. In addition to generous in-kind support, employee volunteers have played a key role working alongside Terra to uplift young families. They presented a lavish lunch spread and gifts for young moms at Braemar School to celebrate Valentine’s Day in 2020, helping to create positive lasting memories for our moms. This experience was very special for our families, as holidays can be a lonely and challenging time for teen parents struggling to provide necessities and shelter for their families.

Most recently, Imperial Oil stepped up their support for teen parents by sponsoring Terra’s annual fundraiser, Laughs Over Lunch (LOL), this year. Their support enabled us to raise funds for our Stronger Futures Fund to help prepare teen parents for their next chapter in life through new programs such as employment readiness, skills training and mentorship. We are grateful for their generosity and commitment to help our community remain strong and healthy. In addition to Terra, Imperial Oil Strathcona Refinery supports many other local organizations, including the Strathcona County Library and the Strathcona Food Bank.

EPCOR

Terra is an organization that uplifts teen parents to help them achieve their goals and provides the supports to help create strong resilient communities. Because of Terra’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and donors, young families are receiving the resources they need and we are honoured to help play a role in supporting this important organization.” – Gillian Adams, Senior Manager of Marketing and Community Investment, EPCOR

Without EPCOR’s support of Terra Centre for Teen Parents’ only fundraising event in 2021, we would not have raised over $90,000 towards our Stronger Futures Fund. EPCOR’s generous support as an event  sponsor through their Heart + Soul Fund enabled Terra to provide a special matching gift opportunity to  encourage greater giving and helped us secure additional funding from other corporate sponsors.

The Stronger Futures Fund that launched with the support of EPCOR will have a lasting impact on Terra and our participants and the community. This fund will allow Terra to support teen parents in new ways – through dedicated and intentional supports that are focused on employment.

EPCOR has contributed to Terra’s success over many years and in many ways. From employees volunteering their time to make the holiday season special for young families to corporate investments in different programs and events to in-kind donations, EPCOR is truly a valued Terra partner. Additionally, EPCOR’s continued support of numerous arts, cultural and charitable organizations in our community through pandemic relief and recovery funding helps establish and maintain a vibrant and resilient community.
