Each year, Terra, along with community organizations across Canada celebrate National Philanthropy Day.

National Philanthropy Day is a day to honor, recognize and thank those who contribute their time, talent and financial support to philanthropic organizations.

As a community serving organization, we know that we can’t fully deliver our mission without our donors and volunteers. It’s thanks to generous community members that we are able to have the resources to serve our families and achieve our vision of teen parent families thriving and enriching our community.

We are so grateful to our supporters and are proud of what we can accomplish because of them.  We are excited to share more about our two nominees with you. We hope you are inspired by their amazing philanthropic contributions. To learn more about AFP National Philanthropy Day and see meet other nominees, check out the  AFP Edmonton website.

Jane & Don Howden

Jane Squire Howden and Don Howden embody the spirit of philanthropy – a love of mankind. Since becoming involved with Terra 3 years ago, they have made substantial contributions to enable Terra to better serve young parents in our community. When COVID-19 began, they were among the first to offer to help and generously partnered with us on Terra’s first matching gift fundraising campaign. Their leadership support at this critical time inspired others to give and contributed to new fundraising records, helping to ensure as many young parents as possible can continue accessing Terra’s mental health program without barriers.

Education is especially important to Jane and Don. Through their support, they have contributed to supporting over 100 teen moms work towards high school completion over the past couple of years and provided scholarships to deserving post-secondary students in the community. As passionate Terra supporters, they are enthusiastic partners in innovation. Their recent significant investment in our Community Services program enabled us to transform our group programming model to better help young families create stable and healthy lives. By example, Jane and Don have inspired many others to give selflessly to create a better world.

Rotary Club of Edmonton South

Since 2009, the Rotary Club of Edmonton South has been a valued supporter of Terra Centre for Teen Parents. In addition to past support through significant financial contributions from special event proceeds and Terra fundraising initiatives, they decided to get more involved recently through volunteering. Club members have worked hard to help create meaningful experiences for teen moms and their children at Braemar School. They helped provide a special holiday celebration for young families last year by preparing the meal and participating in festive activities. The Club also generously took and printed professional photos for families. These photos were a special token for our young moms to not only remember this special day but also serve as a reminder that they are supported by the greater community.

Most recently, the Club stepped up to help ensure a safe and welcoming outdoor environment for young children and staff at Braemar. Members repaired the garden storage shed, generously donating labor and materials. Their support allows outdoor programming for young children at Terra’s Child and Family Support Centre to continue.

Terra is truly grateful for the Rotary Club of Edmonton South’s support over the years and are especially grateful for their willingness to become more involved directly on the front lines.

Thank you Jane, Don and Rotary Club of Edmonton South! Your commitment to Terra and our families is helping to make our community stronger.
