THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Terra – Centre for pregnant & parenting teens extends its gratitude to the Edmonton community for its outstanding support of the 2010 Baby Heroes Diaper Drive.
The second-annual campaign was a success story, raising 116,431 diapers which will provide support for many young families locally. Baby Heroes also helped raise awareness about Terra’s services and programs, the incredible work being done at Braemar School and the challenges experienced by teen parents.
“Not only are we pleased with the success of the diaper collection, there was great success in informing and inspiring the community to lend more support to young parents and their children,” says Karen Mottershead, Executive Director, Terra. “Our ambassadors did an outstanding job representing teen parents and in communicating how motivated many teen parents are to complete Grade 12 so they can build stronger futures for their children.”
To recap the total donations:
We received 88,796 diapers. Combined with $4,600 in cash donations, that’s the equivalent of 116,431 diapers!
The Bossy Momma Flaunt event at Oasis Conference Centre on October 23 collected 3,812 diapers and more than $2,200 in cash, which is equivalent to 18,112 diapers!
And let’s not forget our Baby Heroes Corporate Challenge:
The housing powerhouses of the Edmonton REALTORS® Community Foundation and the Edmonton and area Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association went head to head to see which organization could raise the most diapers. If the AMBA won, REALTORS® Community Foundation board members were to wear bibs and dine on baby food: creamed corn, beef broth, sweet potato custard and for dessert, pureed prunes – all served cold! If the REALTORS® won, Gord McCallum of First Foundation Residential Mortgages was to wear a diaper, bib and soother!
And the final tally for these housing powerhouses? The AMBA collected 23,692 diapers and the REALTORS® collected 25,403.
Much respect to Gord McCallum for donning the Depends and making the wrap-up at Braemar School on October 25 an event to remember. Gord truly exemplifies community spirit. Both organizations really came through for Terra and are already talking about supporting next year’s drive. Again, many thanks.
Thanks also to Baby Heroes’ official campaign sponsors:
- Kingsway Mall (the official drop-off location!)
- 96.3 Capital FM
- Global Edmonton
- K-97
- Industry Images
And to our donation locations:
- Emergia Hair Group (who also did a great hair cut promotion to support the campaign!)
- Kids’ Furniture Gallery (who also transported the collected diapers from Kingsway Mall to Braemar)
- d’Lish Urban Kitchen & Wine Bar
Special thanks also to Global Edmonton reporter Kendra Slugoski for taking the time to visit Braemar and do a special feature on the school and Terra.
And, of course, the diaper drive would not have been possible without the support of dozens of volunteers! Your sense of community is most appreciated.
Everyone’s involvement helped increase awareness and generate support for pregnant and parenting teens, along with the recognition of Terra as an organization. It was tremendously pleasing to have Edmontonians take notice of Terra and the important services the organization provides for our community.
Again, we thank you for the valuable support throughout this campaign and look forward to working with you again next year
